Long, long ago there were no people or plants or animals. There was no sun, no moon, and no stars to be seen. There was no sky or earth. Only God lived. God changed all this by making the earth, the sun, moon and stars. God made all things in a special way. The Bible, God’s Word, tells us how he did this. He made all things out of nothing. God was able to do this because he has almighty power.
First God used his almighty power to make the heaven and earth. But the earth he made was empty, dark and covered by water. So God said, “Let there be light.” As soon as God said that, there was light. Now there were both light and darkness. God called the time when it was light “day.” The time when it was dark he called “night.” The time of light and the time of darkness were the first day.
On the second day God said, “Let there be a sky above the earth.” The sky he called “heaven.” It was like a beautiful blanket of air in which clouds could float. The sky covered the whole earth.
On the third day God made changes so that water no longer covered the whole earth. “Let the waters come together in certain places, and let the dry land show in other places,” God said. In this way God made the oceans, lakes, rivers and the land on which we live. After there was land on which things could grow, God said, “Let there be grass and flowers and trees.” God made seeds grow from these plants. New plants could grow from these seeds.
When the fourth day came, God made the sun, the moon and all the stars. He made all of them by saying, “Let there be lights in the sky. The sun will shine during the day to light and warm the earth, and the others will give light for the night.”
When the fifth day came, the Lord began making living creatures. God said, “Let there be many fish in the waters and many birds in the sky.” In this way God made many different kinds of birds and fish. God then blessed the birds and the fish in a special way. He made them in such a way that they could have young ones.
God also wanted to have animals to live on the dry land. So on the sixth day God said, “Let there be animals and creeping things on the earth.” With these words he made such animals as cows, horses, lions, tigers, and snakes.
God’s world was nearly finished. But one thing was missing in this beautiful world God had made with his almighty power. There were no people. The first people God made were a man and a woman. Of all the things God created, or made out of nothing, they were his most important creation.
Something to think about: Even though we don’t deserve it, God has given to us all these things. Let’s thank and praise him for his love and goodness!
